There are some massive Iron Man 3 spoilers coming up. If you have no interest in ruining any aspect of the movie, turn away from your screens. Go on, shoo!
Gwyneth Paltro who plays the character Pepper Potts within the ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Avengers’ franchises revealed some information that has been speculated for quite some time:
I didn’t mind wearing the suit at all. I thought it was light and perfectly comfortable and my children thought I was extremely cool. They were here on a day where I was in it, so they were trying it on and when my son saw me in the suit, he had the biggest eyes, so it was definitely worth it.
As suspected, Pepper Potts will wear the Iron Man suit. It is believed that she will rescue Tony and Rhodey towards the end of the film.
President of Marvel Kevin Feige also gave some interesting information about the film’s plot including the birth of ‘The Patriot’:
So, at the beginning, we see that the President has asked Rhodey as War Machine to get a new paint job and take on the new moniker of the Iron Patriot in order to do American business and be the American hero as opposed to The Avengers or Iron Man himself, who is sort of a separate entity… In a way it becomes a buddy action film, in the third act, where they team up. Neither of them have a suit at a certain point in the movie and they really team up in a great, sort of old- fashioned action movie way and Don and Robert have such an amazing rapport. Aldrich Killian heads a brain-trust organization called AIM that is developing Extremis, which is something that taps into human DNA and is able to reprogram it and regenerate limbs and enhance strength and cure wounds. But it also could change the whole world, which is what Killian intends to do with it.
The mention of ‘Extremis’ should be getting Iron Man fans very excited. For those of you who don’t know what it is, ‘Extremis’ is a six-issue story arc from Iron Man Vol4 that ran during 2005 and 2006. ‘Extremis’ was written by Warren Ellis and is often refered to as one of the finest Iron Man stories to date.
The ‘Extremis’ storyline incorporates an updated origin story for Iron Man which was used within the first film. After Tony manages to escape the terrorists, three men enter a slaughterhouse and one of them injects himself with an experimental drug and is refered to as ‘Mallen’. This causes him immense physical pain and he begins to change physically. The two others men run for their lives. The man who injected himself ends up in a cocoon of scar tissue as his body continues to change over time.
It is later revealed that at Futurepharm Corporation, Dr. Aldrich Killian has committed suicide in his office. He leaves behind a note which states that he issued the dangerous ‘Extremis’ serum. Maya Hansen, an ex-lover of Stark’s finds Killian’s body and contacts Tony.
Tony eventually squares off against the man from the slaughter house, who despite looking human is extremely agile and incredibly strong. He manages to defeat Tony as Stark is too cumbersome in his armour. Near death, Stark calls for help and is airlifted back to Futurepharm.
Stark requests that he is injected with the ‘Extremis’ virus as he understands that the regenerative capabilities are the only way for him to not only survive, but to be able to defeat his foe.
While in his cocoon, Tony has flashbacks to his captivity and re-lives his escape in the MKI Iron Man Armour. 24 hours later, Stark breaks out of his cocoon fully healed and now has an internal control sheath for his Iron Man armour which can emerge upon mental command. With his new abilities he is able to ‘lowjack’ himself into a whole host of technology including phones, computers and global satellite systems.
Tony manages to defeat his enemy and learns that Killen wasn’t alone in releasing the virus. He realises that Maya aided him in finding a human test subject. Tony confronts Maya and learns that she used the test subject in order to save on military funds which were diverted to cancer research.
Any of this sounding familiar?
What we know:
The Mandarin has the same flag as the terrorists that captured Tony Stark.
Rebecca Hall is playing Maya
It has been confirmed that ‘Extremis’ will feature in Iron man 3.
Pepper Potts and many other presumed human test subjects are shown in the trailers to be held against their will.
Going by the above information we can presume that a flashback will occur where we learn that The Mandarin was involved in the capture of Tony Stark in the first film.
Maya perhaps provides The Mandarin with ‘Extremis’.
Pepper Potts is captured and injected with the virus. Instead of Tony Stark having the abilities listed above, Pepper Potts does. She now becomes the superhero Rescue.
A love triangle exists between Pepper Potts, Tony Stark and his ex-girlfriend Maya.
As Rescue, Pepper aids Tony and Rhodey while they fight without their suits. (Stark has the use of one glove.)
Stark is perhaps heartbroken when he no-longer recognises the woman he loves as the Pepper Potts he once knew has gone forever. (Check out how zombie-like Pepper is in the above picture!)
